Surveyors Unite Under New Banner

Tuesday 07, Nov 2023

Following our Associations AGM last week, we are excited to announce that our membership approved a new trading name of Surveyors Australia.

The Surveyors Australia working group has been formed and met twice this year to unite the various Surveying Institutions and Associations to tackle the changes we are facing as an industry.  The group includes representatives from:

  • Association of Consulting Surveyors National

  • Association of Consulting Surveyors New South Wales

  • Association of Consulting Surveyors South Australia

  • Association of Consulting Surveyors Victoria

  • Australian Institution of Mine Surveyors

  • Country Surveyors Association (NSW)

  • Institution of Surveyors New South Wales

  • Institution of Surveyors Victoria

  • Institution of Surveyors Western Australia

  • CSN member representatives from the Northern Territory and Queensland

This change will not affect any existing arrangements, such as membership.  The change recognises a more collaborative approve to share ideas, actions and advocacy on behalf of surveyors across Australia.  Our website is in the middle of upgrades and you will note that we now highlight every state and territory and will provide updates from across the country to keep everyone informed.

At the Annual General Meeting on 3 November 2023, the members of the Association of Consulting Surveyors unanimously supported becoming “Surveyors Australia” to better unite the profession.

“The vision for our Association has not changed – we still want to see thriving surveying businesses operating across the country.  Our purpose continues to be to promote, represent and support surveyors and their businesses.  Our Board and our Members feel that a new name will help unite the profession and give us a stronger voice in our states and territories and at a national level,” said CEO of Consulting Surveyors, Michelle Blicavs.

All Surveying firms are welcome in the membership of Surveyors Australia – land surveying firms, engineering surveying firms and any organisations employing surveyors including civil engineering firms, local government and mining companies.  “It is our goal to provide support for all surveyors across Australia as we continue to tackle the skills shortage,” says Craig Turner, President.

This has come about because in March 2023, the Association of Consulting Surveyors National confirmed that the shortage of surveyors will continue for the next ten years peaking in 2025 due to strong growth in residential construction and mining work, as revealed in independent economic analysis by Oxford Economics.

“The statistics continue to reinforce the situation of severe shortages across Australia,” Consulting Surveyors CEO Michelle Blicavs says.

The industry has been working hard to increase the number of surveying professionals over the last 12 years including the development of the Surveyors Academy to deliver Vocational Education directly to surveyors across the country, with the first cohort graduating on the 9th November 2023.

Delivering the results of the Oxford Economics report across Australia provided resounding feedback from the profession of the need for unification.  In June 2023 a meeting was held in Sydney with representatives from the Institutions of Surveyors and the Associations of Consulting Surveyors from across the Country.  Follow up meetings confirmed the need for a more inclusive name for the national peak surveying body, to ensure that all surveyors feel welcome.

“Alongside other measures, being under one inclusive banner is another way that we can raise awareness of the skills shortage and advocate together to achieve results for our industry.” Mrs Blicavs said.
